Game Freak’s new action game, Beast of Reincarnation, is now live on Steam with a planned release date of August 4, 2026.
Wait, wait is this from the Pokémon team?
Yeah, that Game Freak. The studio that gave us a whole world of beloved creatures and made catching them feel like magic.
This time, no cute monsters. No turn-based battles. Just a dark, emotional action RPG set in a ruined future Japan and it actually looks really good.
The game was officially revealed during the Xbox Showcase in June 2025, and it’s coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam on August 4, 2026.
Even better It’ll be available day one on Xbox Game Pass, which is a big deal for a Japanese-developed title.

You play as Emma, a young woman branded as “the Witherer” because she can absorb a mysterious plague called the Blight that’s turning animals and plants into twisted creatures.
Her only friend is Koo, her loyal dog, who fights alongside her.

What stands out isn’t just the combat, it’s the relationship between Emma and Koo. During gameplay demos, they move as a team: Emma blocks an attack, and Koo leaps in for a follow-up strike. It feels less like a gimmick and more like a real partnership.

Visually, the game leans into a haunting mix of realism and fantasy.
While Emma looks human, her dog Koo shows clear signs of the Blight his tail transformed into twisting, vine-like growths that pulse with eerie light.
The tone is serious, almost melancholic closer to NieR: Automata than anything Game Freak has done before.

There’s no Nintendo Switch version announced which is surprising, given that Game Freak has worked closely with Nintendo for decades.
While it’s possible a Switch port could come later, the game’s heavy use of advanced lighting and physics may make it technically challenging.
For now, it’s confirmed only for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
One last thing
I’ve always known about Pokémon.
Who hasn’t? But I haven’t really played much of the main series.
Still, you don’t have to be a longtime fan to see why those bright, creature-collecting adventures have such a huge following.
Beast of Reincarnation feels like a fresh direction for Game Freak, and from what we’ve seen, it’s shaping up really well.

I especially like the parry system shown in the trailer. Timing your block to completely cancel an enemy’s attack feels precise and rewarding.
It’s exciting to see them explore this kind of action-focused design.
