As the official release date for Phantom Blade Zero approaches on October 29, 2026, the developers continue to release preview videos, offering players a closer look at gameplay while helping them make an informed purchase decision.
So, what key details were revealed in the latest official video? Let’s take a look.

Used under fair use for commentary, criticism, and educational purposes.
In the previous video, the developers revealed the identity of the mysterious masked character, “Mó Yuán.” Both his face model and motion capture were provided by renowned Hong Kong actor Donnie Yen, with the game even faithfully reproducing his iconic martial arts moves from the Ip Man film series. This time around, Donnie Yen not only made a live-action commentary appearance, but also revealed his role as a “Creative Consultant” for the game.
The announcement has naturally fired up kung fu enthusiasts and built up further momentum for game pre-orders.
Beyond the excitement surrounding Donnie Yen, Soulframe Ling, Creative Director at S-GAME, also systematically outlined the core visual philosophy of Phantom Blade Zero from a developer’s perspective.
Kung Fu Punk: The Core Visual Identity
Phantom Blade Zero centers on the concept of “Kung Fu Punk.” While it might sound abstract at first, recent gameplay showcases and concept art make the idea clear: rather than simply stacking two aesthetics together, the game blends traditional Chinese culture with Western punk design to build a unique fictional universe.

The overarching tone remains anchored in traditional Wuxia, but mechanical punk elements are woven into enemy and boss designs. For instance, smoking industrial chimneys alongside bosses featuring mechanical limbs and cybernetic modifications blend these seemingly clashing styles to fuse naturally, creating a distinct visual identity for the game.
Narrative Setting: PANZHEN and the 66-Day Countdown
Players assume the role of Soul, an assassin who is stabbed through the heart during a duel with his close friend, Zuoshang. Though saved by a mysterious physician who replaces his heart, Soul is left with only 66 days to live.

Framed as a traitor, he flees his former organization and must uncover the conspiracy and find the truth before his time runs out. The story takes place around “Pangzhen,” a chaotic crossroads where friend and foe are hard to distinguish—a microcosm of the “Wulin,” where order gives way to survival.
World Design: Exploration-Driven Storytelling
Soulframe Ling clarified that Phantom Blade Zero is neither a traditional open-world nor a strictly linear experience. Based on current gameplay footage, its structure appears to lie somewhere in between, offering a structure that may resemble that of Black Myth: Wukong—maintaining a tight main storyline while leaving room for exploration.
Ling also emphasized that every corner of the world holds surprises and narrative clues, encouraging players to actively explore their surroundings.

The world map is rendered in a traditional Chinese ink-wash art style. Players can travel between 8 distinct regions via fast-travel points, slowly piecing the narrative together by defeating bosses, gathering loot, and uncovering hidden clues. Beyond the main story, the game features hidden quests, side storylines, and secret bosses to add further depth to its exploration and narrative layers.
Combat System: Strategic Combinations of Skills and Gear
With combat at its core, Phantom Blade Zero aims to showcase martial arts at their absolute limit.

The game features 30 main weapons, 25 side weapons, and a broad selection of armor and skills. Switching or upgrading weapons unlocks new move sets, and upgrade materials can be refunded at no cost, allowing players to transfer resources to new gear without worrying about wasted progression.

Combat requires flexible gear adjustments based on enemy setups. For example, when facing shielded opponents, players need to break their guard using fist-type weapons before switching to other gear for damage output. Additionally, the game includes ranged and specialized weaponry—such as bows, cannons, and flamethrowers—which are presumed to be acquired by defeating specific bosses.
Difficulty Levels: From Story-Focused to Hardcore Challenges
Phantom Blade Zero offers four difficulty settings to accommodate different player preferences:
- WAYFARER: Lowers combat difficulty, allowing players to feel like a martial arts master while focusing on the story.
- PATHBREAKER: The standard difficulty, balancing narrative progression with combat challenge.
- HELLWALKER: A hard mode requiring higher mechanical skill and strategic execution.
- 66DAYS: An extreme challenge mode where every death deducts days from the remaining survival count. If the counter reaches zero, the protagonist suffers permadeath, making it tailored for players seeking a hardcore experience.
