Resident Evil: Requiem – A Eulogy for the Past, a Glimpse of Hope

Thirty years have passed since the nightmare consumed Raccoon City. In 2026, the city—once erased by a nuclear strike and sealed off from the world for decades—will finally reveal its buried scars once more. Capcom’s latest mainline entry, Resident Evil: Requiem, is not just a tribute to the franchise’s origins; it’s a haunting modern fable about trauma, memory, and the fragile possibility of redemption.

The story begins with Grace Ashcroft, a young FBI technical analyst who should be safe behind a desk—but is instead drawn back to the place that haunts her childhood: Rainwood Lodge. Eight years earlier, her mother, Elisa Ashcroft—a journalist who survived the Raccoon City incident—was found dead under mysterious circumstances at this remote mountain inn. Now, new deaths are occurring in the same location, and the victims show disturbing symptoms: ashen skin, blackened fingertips, as if slowly consumed by an unknown pathogen.

At the same time, Leon S. Kennedy receives an urgent assignment from the BSAA. Similar cases are spreading across the country, all pointing to a classified project codenamed “ELPIS”—the ancient Greek word for “hope.” But in the world of Resident Evil, hope has always been a dangerous illusion. Leon’s investigation leads him deep into the ruins of Raccoon City, to a facility disguised as a long-term care center: Rosemount. Beneath its quiet facade lies a secret laboratory run by Victor Gideon, a former Umbrella scientist with a singular obsession.

Gideon is no cartoon villain—he’s a man driven by conviction. He believes ELPIS can “purify” humanity, and that Grace is the key to unlocking its potential. Her mother, Elisa, developed a rare antibody after exposure to the T-virus during the original outbreak. That genetic legacy now resides in Grace—and Gideon intends to use it. In one chilling trailer moment, he tells the trembling young woman, “You’re not a victim. You’re the key.”

Requiem unfolds through dual perspectives. Players will alternate between Grace and Leon: her chapters emphasize psychological tension, vulnerability, and survival-focused exploration; his deliver the tactical combat and investigative pacing fans expect from the veteran agent. Their paths converge at Rosemount, where they uncover a truth buried for thirty years—suggesting that Raccoon City’s destruction may have been not an end, but the beginning of something far worse.

The title Requiem carries a double meaning: it mourns the countless lives lost, while quietly asking whether the living can ever truly move on. The development team stresses this is not a nostalgic retread, but a bold evolution—built on the RE Engine, blending immersive first-person horror with classic third-person gameplay, and introducing seamless perspective switching for the first time in the series.

Capcom describes Requiem as a turning point—a game that moves beyond monsters and gunfire to explore how fear shapes us, and whether a flicker of hope, however faint, is worth holding onto in the darkest of times.

Resident Evil: Requiem launches worldwide on February 27, 2026. When the bells toll over Raccoon City’s ruins, players won’t just face horrors from the outside—they’ll confront the ghosts within.
