Well Dweller is the latest creation from independent developer Kyle Thompson, the visionary behind Crypt Custodian and Islets. This title carries forward his signature hand-drawn art style, featuring delicate details and rich colors that blend whimsical charm with a lingering sense of gloom.
This visual tension perfectly captures the essence of a “dark fairy tale” aesthetic. Supporting 11 languages, the game is slated for a full release on Steam in 2026.

A Unique World and Its Inhabitants
Deep within a decaying kingdom consumed by corruption lies a dark, ancient well. At its bottom lives the only creature brave enough to challenge the Wicked Queen: a tiny bird named “Glimmer” who wields a matchstick.
You play as this small but courageous protagonist on an epic quest to burn away tyranny and rescue your family. Along the way, you will encounter a cast of characters with intersecting fates:
- Loot: A mysterious scavenger searching for valuable spoils in abandoned castles who serves as your guide and shopkeeper.
- Aldo: A nomadic mouse fleeing the Queen’s pursuit who will share a campfire with you.
- The Lost Siblings: A flock of birds once under protection, kidnapped overnight by a mad hunter and scattered across the kingdom.

Core Gameplay and Features
As a quintessential Metroidvania, Well Dweller emphasizes a deep fusion of exploration, character progression, and combat:
- Exploration-Driven: Traverse an open world filled with Gothic atmosphere and medieval ruins to uncover the dark truths behind the decaying kingdom.
- Ability Gatekeeping: Gain new skills by defeating bosses and solving puzzles to expand your reach into new areas.
- Combat Mechanics: Use your matchstick as a weapon to light up the darkness while damaging enemies. Players must use strategy to deal with various horrific monsters.
- Trinket System: Collect and combine various small ornaments to customize your loadout and create a unique playstyle.
- Immersive Narrative: Rich storytelling and character interactions build a dark fairy tale universe that is both cute and eerie.

Hands-On Demo Impressions
The most striking aspect of the game is undoubtedly the art style. The hand-drawn visuals are so exquisite that playing feels like flipping through the pages of a dark storybook, with rich environmental details and expertly crafted atmosphere.

Regarding controls, using a gamepad is highly recommended. Despite being a lifelong keyboard and mouse player, I found the controller much more intuitive. Movement, jumping, attacking, and dashing are incredibly fluid, offering a feel that is both weighty and responsive.

The healing mechanic presents a slight learning curve early on. It requires a precise button press as a needle moves across a gauge. During my first boss fight, trying to dodge attacks while timing the heal led to several unnecessary instances of taking damage.

The level design features a multi-branching 2D layout that encourages exploration in every direction. Even though the demo is short, traversing the map takes time and includes several high-difficulty platforming challenges. Collectibles are cleverly hidden in dangerous spots, requiring careful route planning.
The demo features one boss with clear attack patterns. Once you familiarize yourself with the rhythm, it becomes manageable, and I cleared it on my second attempt.

Final Thoughts
Well Dweller uses stunning hand-drawn art to construct a world that is as dreamy as it is macabre. This aesthetic is backed by smooth gameplay and challenging level design.
The visual impact alone is a major draw, and when paired with the deep exploration mechanics, it makes the full version highly anticipated. This is definitely a title to keep on your radar.
