Content Warning: The following video contains graphic violence and blood typical of the Resident Evil series. Viewer discretion is advised.
Ahead of the game’s official release, the latest 13-minute gameplay video from the YouTube channel “Residence of Evil” (@ROEnetwork) shows Leon and the new character Grace playing through two different perspectives. From what is shown, their storylines seem to be designed as complementary to each other.
At the start of the video, Leon is in a hospital-like setting, talking with a nurse. Suddenly, an infected doctor with abnormal behavior walks in holding a chainsaw and begins attacking indiscriminately. Leon quickly takes action to defend himself. From Leon’s combat moves, it seems the game has added many melee finishers that work together with firearms to deliver final killing blows to zombies. Shooting different body parts of zombies also causes different reactions. For example, shooting the knees makes infected enemies move slower, and this can trigger melee or gun-assisted finishers.

The scene then switches to Grace’s storyline. The moment the screen changes, Grace is seen desperately running away from a large enemy chasing her. Just as she is grabbed and about to be dragged off, Leon appears and rescues her. They introduce themselves to each other afterward. Compared to Leon’s calm and composed attitude, Grace appears much more panicked and uneasy. From their conversation, Leon learns that Grace was captured and brought here, but he is curious about the reason why. Suddenly, a metal gate drops down and separates the two. Leon gives his handgun to Grace and tells her to escape quickly.

Alone again, Grace is still clearly shaken and afraid, but having Leon’s gun seems to give her some confidence to survive. She wanders through the hallway but finds that the doors cannot be opened directly. As in previous games, the game requires players to find specific items or keys to unlock rooms. The scene then moves to a kitchen, where chefs and service staff have all been infected and turned into zombies. Interestingly, although they have lost their humanity, they are still performing the jobs they did when alive. This detail was also specifically mentioned in a recent developer interview.
Compared to Leon’s aggressive fighting style, Grace seems to focus more on stealth or simply running away, avoiding fights whenever possible, which increases the sense of tension. Ammo does not seem very plentiful, at least from Grace’s perspective (Leon’s situation is unknown). She also does not appear to have melee kill abilities like Leon’s, making it somewhat difficult when facing multiple zombies. However, a one-hit stealth kill move is visible during stealth mode. It is unclear whether this ability is available to both characters or is unique to Grace.

In addition to fighting zombies, the game keeps the series’ traditional puzzle-solving mechanics, requiring players to calm down and think after intense chases or combat. One interesting trait of Grace is that she seems to have natural immunity, allowing her to extract serum-like substances from dead infected individuals though I’m not sure if these are used to craft healing items or something else entirely. Although her combat ability is limited, this feature may help her survive better.

For item management, the game remains the same as in previous entries, with storage boxes available for players to store extra items, and plants can be collected to craft medicine.
Near the end of the video, the perspective returns to Leon, who now faces a giant infected enemy waiting for him.
Overall, this gameplay segment shows that most of the core mechanics are inherited from previous entries, for example, using specific items or keys to open doors, safe room item storage, and crafting medicine. At the same time, the game tries some new ideas in its gameplay. The overall atmosphere remains strong and fits well with the series’ identity. I feel that if it supported VR first-person mode, the experience would be even stronger (although it seems there is no such plan for now). I am really looking forward to the official release of the game!
