Subnautica 2 Gives Players Unprecedented Freedom to Build Underwater Bases

Discover how Subnautica 2’s all new tile based building system lets players design truly custom underwater bases drawing windows, shaping rooms, and collaborating in ways never before possible.

In the latest developer diary video, the Subnautica 2 team gave fans their first in-depth look at the game’s completely reimagined base-building system. Moving away from the fixed modules of the original, this new approach breaks all the old rules with a fresh “procedural + tile-based” design that truly lets players build however they want.

According to the developers, this system has been quietly in development for nearly three years built almost entirely from scratch. Their guiding principle? Maximum creative freedom. In previous games, windows, rooms, and corridors came as pre-made blocks. Now, bases are constructed from countless small, interlocking “tiles,” each one smart enough to seamlessly connect with its neighbors, resulting in smooth, organic structures that feel alive.

A player is using a handheld tool to draw and customize a curved window on the side of a base module. A green outline shows the selected shape, with an interface overlay offering options like “Change Window Variant” and “Remove Mode.” The view outside the window reveals deep blue ocean water.

One of the most exciting breakthroughs is the new window system. Forget being stuck with square or round frames players can now “draw” windows of any shape, like using a brush. Want a curved porthole, a narrow observation slit, or an irregularly shaped dome overlooking the ocean? Go for it. The team especially highlighted corridors and upcoming fully circular rooms as their proudest achievements so far designs that pay homage to Subnautica 1’s iconic aesthetic while opening up far more customization options.

An underwater base constructed from multiple connected modules supported by stilts, floating above a rocky seabed. The structure includes solar panels, antennas, and various equipment pods. The player’s hands are visible in the foreground, holding tools, with depth and oxygen indicators displayed on-screen.

Personalization will also get a major upgrade. In future updates, players will be able to paint walls, adjust light colors, toggle individual lights on or off, and even customize interior decor details. The devs joked, “We’ve just built the stage the real stars are you.” They’re particularly excited to see how friends collaborate in multiplayer mode, building shared bases together and creating cozy underwater homes of their own.

Overall, base-building in Subnautica 2 is no longer just about survival it’s becoming a canvas for player creativity. As one developer put it: “This is a collaboration between us and the community.” With testing ramping up, it won’t be long before the ocean floor fills with wildly imaginative, deeply personal underwater marvels.

The game is coming in 2026 no exact date yet.
