I logged on today expecting to play some PUBG, only to realize the servers were down for routine maintenance.
Just as I was about to quit out, I noticed a new arcade minigame on the right side of the screen: POBG.

Used under fair use for commentary, criticism, and educational purposes.
Honestly, this is a brilliant feature. It gives players a fun way to stay entertained while waiting for the main game to come back up. Looking into it, this seems to be a feature added around late July or early August. In the past, maintenance meant staring at a static text prompt or closing the client entirely—it’s great to finally have something to actually play.
I’m not sure if POBG is a temporary event or a permanent addition, so I’d recommend giving it a shot while it’s available.
First Impressions: A Top-Down Pocket PUBG
At its core, POBG is a top-down, retro-style version of the main game. It retains the same core survival loop, complete with the original gun sound effects. There’s no story or dialogue here—just pure, arcade-style action as you wipe out waves of enemies parachuting into the map.
The fun twist? While you play as a human, your enemies are gear-stacked, battle-ready chickens. Fighting angry, armed poultry makes the whole experience hilarious.

The game features several distinct zones—deserts, snowfields, jungles, ruins, and prison mountains. Each area has its own architectural layout and unique enemy spawns, ending with a boss fight that cranks up the difficulty.
When I tried Normal difficulty, I got stuck on the Ruins boss twice. To capture video footage and show off the full game, I switched down to Easy mode for the full run. Don’t let the “Easy” label fool you, though—one careless move in the late-game stages can still cost you the run.
Controls & Core Mechanics
- Basic Controls:
WASDto move, mouse to aim and shoot, andSpacebarto dodge roll. - Dodge Rolling: This is your primary survival tool. A well-timed roll can make you completely immune to damage, though it operates on a cooldown. When selecting perks between levels, I strongly recommend prioritizing Dodge Cooldown Reduction.

- In-Game Upgrades: Clearing a stage opens a grid of passive skills, but only a few are randomly active and available to grab. Usually, you can only pick one skill to activate (though later stages let you grab two). While what you get comes down to RNG, my top recommendations whenever they pop up are Reload Speed and Body Armor.
- Reload Speed feels like the single most critical stat. When hordes rush you in the late game, taking an extra second to reload often means instant death.
- Body Armor gives you a secondary health bar, giving you much-needed room for error.

Weapon Loadouts & Combat Strategy
- Starter Weapon: You begin by choosing one of three weapons (Short Shotgun, Pistol, or Sniper Rifle). Go with the Pistol for a smooth early game.
- Main Setup: You have two primary weapon slots. My go-to combination is an Auto Shotgun + Assault Rifle.
- The Auto Shotgun delivers insane close-range burst damage and high fire rate, making quick work of enemy mobs.
- The Assault Rifle covers mid-to-long-range targets.
- You also have grenades, but while they deal heavy damage, their long cooldown makes them situational. The Auto Shotgun remains your main workhorse.
- Weapons to Avoid: I’d steer clear of the Sniper Rifle. It deals high single-shot damage, but its low rate of fire makes it unforgiving against fast, aggressive enemies. This is especially true against late-game “Shielded/Blocking Enemies,” who only take damage during or immediately after their attack animations. Snipers struggle heavily against this mechanic—though feel free to try one out if it fits your playstyle.
Ammo Management: You rarely need to worry about running dry since enemies regularly drop ammo. However, if you do run out of a specific type, swap guns immediately. Any working gun is better than empty hands.

Boss Fight Tips
- Master the Roll: Timed dodges are key to surviving heavy attacks. Bosses often throw grenades or Molotovs with massive area-of-effect zones, so quick reflexes are essential.
- Manage Mobs: Every boss regularly summons minion waves to distract you. While these minions are helpful for farming ammo drops, don’t let their numbers get out of hand, or you’ll quickly get overwhelmed. Focus down the boss while keeping the minion count under control.
- Use the Environment: Buildings aren’t just cover for blocking bullets—you can use them to bottleneck enemy pathfinding. Always stay mobile; if you stop moving, you’ll get surrounded.
Playtime & Final Thoughts
An Easy run takes roughly 40 to 50 minutes from start to finish. Normal or higher difficulties demand much tighter mechanical execution and better perk RNG, likely taking 2 to 3 hours or more.
For a side feature meant to fill maintenance downtime, the polish and fun factor far exceeded my expectations.
If you missed it this time around, make sure you don’t just close the game during the next PUBG maintenance. Give POBG a try!
