Subnautica 2: Exploring the Giant Tree and Shiver Leviathan

Subnautica 2 Early Access Creative Mode exploration: swimming beyond the map boundary to investigate the Giant Tree and Shiver Leviathan up close.

This time, I wasn’t grinding for resources or pushing through the main story. This run was purely about satisfying my burning curiosity.

Remember that massive, tree-like structure (or creature) you see the moment you step out of the lifepod? I just had to go find out what it actually is. I know the game is still in Early Access and content is actively being developed, but leaving that giant object looming in the distance felt like staring at a juicy steak I wasn’t allowed to eat. It was driving me crazy!

To make the exploration as painless as possible, I hopped into Creative Mode. No taking damage, no worrying about food or water—pure freedom.

I tried a couple of different approaches. First, I wanted to see if I could build a base bridge all the way out there. Unfortunately, this “giant tree” sits well outside the map’s playable area, and the game disables building features the moment you cross the boundary. Scratch that plan.

Plan B was using a vehicle. However, I was already halfway through a base build nearby and too lazy to head all the way home to fetch my Tadpole, so I just decided to swim for it. And man, it was a long swim.

According to the game’s mechanics, leaving the map boundaries triggers a Shiver Leviathan attack. No matter what you’re driving, it’ll smash your vehicle and devour you—it’s designed to be an instant-death barrier. Luckily, thanks to Creative Mode, I didn’t have to worry about dying, which gave me the perfect opportunity to get a close-up look at the Shiver Leviathan itself.

So, what did I find? Here is the TL;DR:

Once I finally swam up to the “big tree,” I tried every angle to climb it, but I hit an invisible wall about halfway up every single time. As of right now, there is absolutely nothing at the top.

Since the canopy was a bust, I decided to dive down and check the roots. Down below, it was the exact same story—just empty water. While there are plenty of rumors floating around that this spot will tie into the future storyline, it’s all just speculation for now. We’ll have to wait for an official update to see what the devs have in store!
